On March 12th, SCCS made the important decision to help decrease the spread of the coronavirus in Seattle as we transitioned from our usual in-class programming to strategic modified services for children and families-closing eight early learning centers with 11 locations, greatly impacting 450 families and 120 staff. As we prepare for the reopening of our centers with abbreviated services in line with the CDC's child care recommendations, we are first prioritizing the well-being of the families we serve and the staff we employ.
This year, with the support of GiveBIG, we have a goal of $5,000 to purchase coronavirus prevention services and products to support the reopening of SCCS centers.
GiveBIG is a national event with a local platform hosted by 501 Commons. Given the impacts of the pandemic, GiveBIG will now be a two-day giving event from May 5th-6th with early giving already underway. With funds raised, we will purchase supplies such as hand sanitizing stations near doors, thermal non-touch thermometers, and additional deep cleaning services.
