In Discovering the Brilliance and Beauty in Black, Dr. Pat Sullivan, a researcher and home-based child care provider, shares a deeper understanding of color and race through a narrative inquiry project, an approach to making sense of data that recognizes the value of how stories frame our lives, all which came about during a particular outdoor play session.

In what was described as a routine moment feeding animals, a child pointed to a crow and exclaimed the bird was bad because "it's black". In the article, Dr. Sullivan shares how teachers can begin talking about race and color by encouraging children to consider all the special things in the world that come in the color black.
